Following a teaser yesterday, we now know what the next addition to Marvel’s continually-expanding X-line of titles is going to be. X of Swords (the X is a roman numeral again, as it was in Powers of X) is a new, 15-part X-Men event, being spearheaded by ‘Head of X’ Jonathan Hickman, that will cross over with all of the current ongoing X-titles. The project was announced at Marvel’s C2E2 X-Men panel, their final of three straight panels for the day.
A promotional image for the event by artist Mark Brooks, seen above, features numerous Marvel mutants wielding swords of various shapes and styles. Some of them, like Magik and Nightcrawler, are swords they’ve used before, while others appear to be new blades. Here’s how Marvel describes X of Swords:
In this sprawling saga, the new mutant nation of Krakoa faces their biggest challenge yet. Threatened by powerful forces from the unknown, ten mutants will rise up to defend their home. Arming themselves with legendary blades, both new and familiar ones from Marvel history, mutantkind will finally meet its mystical destiny. Impacting the entire X-Men franchise and setting the stage for the future of mutantkind, X OF SWORDS will be a modern X-Men epic that both longtime and new X-Men fans dare not miss.
Given how interconnected the X-titles have been since the conclusion of House of X & Powers of X and the debut of what’s being called “Dawn of X,” the idea of a large-scale crossover isn’t that surprising. Fifteen chapters is a long story, but given the sheer number of X-titles (X-Men, X-Force, New Mutants, Marauders, Excalibur, X-Factor, Children of the Atom, Wolverine, and I feel like I probably forgot at least one), with multiple X-titles coming out each week and titles consistently double-shipping, X of Swords will probably all be over within a month.
X of Swords begins in July 2020.
