Catwoman is the next DC Comics hero to get the 80th anniversary celebration treatment, with the publisher announcing a 100-page spectacular due in April.
The trickle of these celebrations started two years back with Superman and Action Comics #1000. Last year, it was Batman’s turn with the best-selling Detective Comics #1000. January will be Wonder Woman’s turn with Wonder Woman #750, followed by The Flash in February, and Robin in March. The Catwoman book (full title being the Catwoman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1) is due April 15, with the publisher describing it as “a landmark one-shot.”
The creators involved are certainly worthy of such a designation. The cover will be done by Joelle Jones, who is the regular Catwoman writer/artist. Inside the book, readers will find work from Ed Brubaker, Cameron Stewart, Paul Dini, Ann Nocenti, Adam Hughes, Tom King, Mikel Janín, Mindy Newell, Will Pfeifer, and Emanuela Lupacchino, as well as pinups by Steve Rude, Tula Lotay, Jim Balent, and more.
Some creators have already started teasing work from the comic, specifically referring here to Cameron Stewart, who did so on Twitter with a peak at the image below:
Stewart will be re-teaming with Ed Brubaker to expand on their previous run on the character with a 12-page story called The Art of Picking a Lock, which takes place near the end of their original work. Check out more of that art below:
Paul Dini, meanwhile, will be debuting a new character, just in case a giant 80th anniversary celebration isn’t enough to entice collectors and speculators.
As with all the rest of the 80th anniversary celebrations from DC, this one will get a set of decade-specific variant covers. You can check out the artists who will be doing them below:
- 1940s variant cover by ADAM HUGHES
- 1950s variant cover by TRAVIS CHAREST
- 1960s variant cover by J. SCOTT CAMPBELL
- 1970s variant cover by FRANK CHO
- 1980s variant cover by STANLEY “ARTGERM” LAU
- 1990s variant cover by GABRIELE DELL’OTTO
- 2000s variant cover by JIM LEE and SCOTT WILLIAMS
- 2010s variant cover by JEEHYUNG LEE
Very cool. Anyway, see you all back here in a month for the Green Lantern anniversary celebration announcement (maybe…does that math work out? I’m not the best at this).
