DC Fandome: LUCIFER musical episode tease with some crotch-splitting moves

It is absolutely no secret to fans of Lucifer that the cast is full of triple-threat performers who love to sing and dance as much as they love to act. The show has taken every opportunity to showcase their casts’ skills — most recently in Season 5 we saw Lesley Ann Brandt performing on a stage in a black-and-white bottle episode. During their DC Fandome panel this year, Director Sherwin Shilati and executive producers/showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich teased the long-awaited Lucifer musical episode.

Modrovich said that the idea began to blossom after filming episode six of season three, where Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and Ella (Aimee Garcia) head to Las Vegas. In “Vegas with Some Radish,” Lucifer performs a rendition of “Luck Be A Lady” with Ella posing as one of the back-up dancers.

This upcoming musical episode will feature far more than just one musical number as the panel debuted an exclusive clip of “Another One Bites the Dust” performed by Tom Ellis, Aimee Garcia, Lauren German, and Kevin Alejandro. Directed by Shilati, the scene included a dead coach on a high school football field, some players, some cheerleaders, and the whole marching band.

And, although Shilati and Modrovich emphasized how coordinated and detailed the planning for a musical episode can be, there was still some room for improvisation. For one, there is a scene early on in the musical sequence of the clip where we see Lauren German twerking on Tom Ellis that had the panelist laughing and saying that they were glad the improv made the cut.

Alongside finding an important narrative reason for everyone bursting into song, it was also important to find everyone’s comfort levels when performing. Modrovich and Henderson said that it was important for them to check with everyone on the cast and see what they were most comfortable doing, whether it was singing, dancing, or both (and for the most part, it seems the majority was jazzed to do both).

For Tom Ellis, this included also making sure the wardrobe was musical ready. Modrovich stated that Ellis’ suit had to be specially tailored using a technique that allowed for more stretch in the armpits and crotch area so he could perform the dance numbers. And yet, she laughed, Ellis still did manage to split the crotch of his pants. Lucifer is never one to turn down a high-kick opportunity!

Congratulations were also in order for Modrovich and Henderson who announced that the show would end after six seasons instead of five earlier this summer.

“You can’t kill the devil, my friend,” Modrovich joked.

“Can’t keep a good devil down. It is the strangest thing. We are potentially the most cancelled/uncancelled show that’s ever existed,” Henderson said. “It’s a mixture of emotional whiplash and also joy and gratitude.” He went on to elaborate, “We had a chance to end the series Season 5, because we were told it was ending and we were given the option to decide whether or not we had more story to tell. And at first, we were like, ‘No, this is it, we’re ready to go.’ And it was very much in our court, and Ildy [Modrovich] and I and the room talked about it a bunch. We were like, ‘Well…’”

“‘We got one more story to tell,’” Modrovich added.

Henderson mentioned that they were two weeks into the writing room process, “I can’t imagine not telling the story.”

There is still no release date for the second part of Season 5, TVLine reported that production of the show would resume September 24th and they would finish the 16th episode of Season 5 and once that finale was finished filming they would go directly into production for Season 6. It sounds like they are on track, so we will happily wait for more Lucifer soon.

Season 5 Part 1 of Lucifer is now streaming on Netflix.
