Jessica Jones: Blind Spot is getting a print re-issue in 2020. The digital series written by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Mattia De Iulis spent a significant amount of time in the ComiXology Top 25 with each new release before it was released as a trade paperback in 2018, and now, readers will have the chance to take in the story in yet another format: physical single issues.
Thompson was tapped by Jessica Jones creator Brian Michael Bendis to take on the character, for good reason; Blind Spot and Purple Daughter have both received widespread critical acclaim. Purple Daughter, which deals with Jessica digging deep into her past with the Purple Man after the daughter she shares with Luke Cage comes home purple-skinned, was released as a trade paperback in May.
Blind Spot picks up in the time before Purple Daughter, after the Purple Man is gone. When a woman whose case Jessica fumbled at Alias Investigations turns up dead in her office, she becomes the prime suspect in the woman’s murder. She enlists Dr. Strange for help, and things get increasingly complicated from there.
Marvel opting to release this story in three different formats is interesting. It’s similar to the TKO Studios approach of binge-releasing comics in digital, trade, and complete mini-series formats all at the same time. However, Marvel’s approach seems to signify a desire to re-introduce these runs to fans who might have missed them when they were digital-only, by releasing them in a new format months later.
With Thompson heading up major series like the current, critically-acclaimed Captain Marvel run, it makes sense that the publisher would want to capitalize on her popularity and bring in more readers — but is a serialized mini-series the way to go when the trade is already available, especially when Marvel dropped the ball on promoting these digital series to begin with?
