REPORT: Todd Phillips in talks for a JOKER sequel and possibly other DC origin movies

Director Todd Phillips is currently doing a victory lap as his Joker movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix, has attained a billion dollars worldwide and more than $300 million of that in North America alone. He’s also been doing the rounds to help get the movie into various awards races.

The Hollywood Reporter now says that Phillips met with Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich before making Joker to propose a series of DC origin films. Although Emmerich wasn’t ready to agree to Phillips’ suggestion, the director did leave that meeting “with the rights to at least one other DC story” besides Joker.

With the enormous success of Phillips’ first venture, the filmmakeris now in talks to direct a sequel to Joker, and Phoenix, who is a strong contender to win an Oscar for his performance as Arthur Fleck, already has a sequel option in his contract to reprise the role.

While a Joker sequel is kind of a no-brainer – and maybe that sequel would expand on the Batman connections made in the first movie – the suggestion that Phillips might create more DC origin stories either in the vein of Joker or entirely different is an interesting one.

Sure, there’s a lot of directions in which that idea might venture, including more Batman rogues gallery origins, but maybe Phillips and Emmerich are more interested in exploring other DC characters that have yet to make an appearance in a live action film. Creating origin movies for other Batman villains might also conflict with what Matt Reeves is doing in his own movie The Batman, which begins production in 2020.

Maybe The Question is in my brain right now because there’s a new Black Label book called The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage hitting comic shops today – and I’ll have an interview with artists Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz soon (unabashed plug!) – but Phillips background in comedy could be useful to tackle a character like Booster Gold or a lighter or more colorful DC characters.

Joker could be seen as somewhat of an anomaly since it’s a return to the dark and brooding DC universe movie, as created by the likes of Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder, which Warners seemed to be trying to get away from with movies like Aquaman and Shazam!

Let us know in the comments a.) whether you think it’s a good idea to make a sequel to Joker and b.) if you have other suggestions of what Phillips could or should take on.
